The trucking industry is asking lawmakers to center the next surface transportation bill on the National Highway System, parking and the federal excise tax.

With federal highway programs expiring Sept. 30, ATA's Women In Motion Council is pressing lawmakers to prioritize truck parking in the next surface transportation reauthorization.

Agency Administrator Sean McMaster noted that the Transportation Department will deliver more than $275 million in grants to states to expand truck parking nationwide.

An effort to ease truck parking shortages is taking a step forward in South Florida, where ParkPro will open hundreds of parking spaces at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Fla., this summer.

The additions will raise Love’s truck parking space total to 52,000 spots nationwide by the end of 2026, the company said. Love’s currently operates 669 locations in 42 states.

Access to parking for the nation’s commercial drivers will increase because of recent legislation Congress and President Donald Trump approved Feb. 3.

Pennsylvania has added truck parking at 24 sites, while Arizona opened a new lot on Interstate 17 where demand is high. Both states are in the midst of plans to rapidly increase availability.

A bill that would give a significant funding boost for projects aimed at expanding access to truck parking nationwide appears stuck in the Senate.

As a government funding deadline looms, congressional leaders are expected to schedule consideration of a fiscal 2026 transportation bill that includes $200 million for truck parking.

Started in 2022, Truck Parking Club has a goal of establishing 10,000 new truck parking lots in 2026, an increase from the approximately 3,800 it now has in operation across 49 states.
