Volkswagen apparently wants to be more than just friends with Aurora Innovation, a self-driving car company testing autonomous vehicles in Pittsburgh.

Self-driving car companies testing in Pennsylvania may have to have a second safety engineer in the passenger seat if they want to comply with new state guidelines.

Uber’s self-driving cars returned July 24 to Pittsburgh’s streets four months after one of its autonomous SUVs hit and killed a woman crossing a street in Tempe, Ariz.

Uber laid off its team of self-driving car safety drivers in Pittsburgh on July 11, the company confirmed.

Uber is shutting down testing operations in Arizona and focusing instead on testing in Pittsburgh and San Francisco, according to an internal e-mail from Eric Meyhofer, a Carnegie Mellon University graduate and the head of Uber’s self-driving car operations.

Pennsylvania will ask Uber Technologies Inc. and any company developing self-driving cars with the same technology onboard to immediately stop testing.

Aurora Innovation’s 2018 is off to a booming start. The self-driving car company with offices in Pittsburgh and Silicon Valley started the year announcing partnerships with Hyundai and Volkswagen.

PPG announced Jan. 16 it is partnering with the University of Michigan’s Mcity to test paint and other vehicle coatings specially designed for autonomous vehicles.

Aptiv left a piece of Pittsburgh in Las Vegas when it tore down its booth last week at the largest electronics show in Las Vegas.
