olvo Trucks North America and Mack Trucks said last week they anticipate being able to meet Environmental Protection Agency emissions standards set to take effect in 2007 by modifying their current cooled exhaust gas recirculation systems and adding diesel particulate filters.

If the two subsidiaries of Sweden’s Volvo AB can successfully implement that technology, they will bypass the need to use selective catalytic reduction and nitrogen oxide adsorbers, which had been until recently the two most frequently discussed options for meeting the 2007 standards.

However, the two manufacturers left open the possibility of using SCR systems in the future.

SCR appears to be the main pollution-reduction technology for truck engines in Europe, starting in 2005.

With their statement, Mack and Volvo joined International Truck & Engine Corp. and engine maker Cummins Inc., which late last year separately announced similar plans to eschew SCR in favor of EGR technology.
