Shell Introducing Oil for Automatic Transmissions

PARK CITY, Utah — Shell Lubricants is introducing a fuel-efficient and long-life transmission and gearbox oil that meets the requirements of automatic transmissions used by Volvo Trucks and Mack Trucks, company officials said.

Shell Spirax S6 GXME 75W-80 will meet requirements for Volvo transmission specification 97307 for use in Volvo I-Shift and Mack mDrive transmissions, said Dan Arcy, Shell Lubricants’ OEM technical manager.

The oil is formulated with synthetic base oils and additive technology for improved lubrication and lower operating temperatures over longer oil-drain intervals of up to 250,000 miles, Arcy said at a press event here Thursday.

Shell is also is working on developing lower-viscosity engine oils to help fleets boost engine fuel economy with looming greenhouse gas emissions standards for heavy trucks, Arcy said.

Shell Lubricants — which includes the Shell Rotella engine-oil line — has consolidated its transport lubricants into three categories: Shell Tellus, for hydraulic oils; Shell Spirax, for transmissions fluids; and Shell Gadus, for greases.
