DOT Briefs ATA Carriers on Hazmat Security Rules

he Transportation Department’s Research and Special Programs Administration designed its new hazardous materials transportation security planning and training rules to be flexible and not overly burdensome, an agency official said June 9.

“So much hazmat is transported in so many ways by so many people it would have been impossible for us to develop a single security plan for everyone,” said Susan Gorsky, a senior RSPA specialist and principal author of the new rules. Gorsky spoke at a seminar organized by American Trucking Associations and held at its headquarters in Alexandria, Va.

“You’ll find a lot of the stuff we’re talking about that goes into the security plans are common sense things you’re doing already,” she said.
