Diesel fell for the first time in three weeks, dipping 0.9 cent to $2.951 a gallon, while gasoline took its first drop in a month, the Department of Energy said Monday.

Diesel had risen 2.9 cents in the past two weeks, following four declines that had totaled 6 cents.

Trucking’s main fuel hit a three-month high of $2.991 in early August, the highest level since it had topped $3 a gallon in May.

Gasoline, meanwhile, fell 2.9 cents to $2.964 a gallon, its first decline in four weeks, DOE said following its weekly survey of filling stations.

Gas had gained 4.1 cents in the past two weeks after being unchanged three weeks ago.

Diesel is now 35 cents over the same week last year, while gas is 19.5 cents higher than a year ago, according to DOE figures.

Crude oil rose by the most in two weeks Friday, gaining $1.31 to finish the week at $76.49 a barrel. Futures rose 3 cents Monday to close at $76.52, Bloomberg reported.

Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
