The president of the United Auto Workers said Sept. 22 the union will expand its strike against major automakers by walking out of 38 General Motors and Stellantis plants in 20 states.

Stellantis gave the the United Auto Workers a new contract proposal as General Motors and Stellantis announced fresh layoffs Sept. 20 that they blamed on damage from the strike.

The leader of the United Auto Workers said that a limited strike targeting plants in Missouri, Michigan and Ohio may be expanded if “serious progress” toward an new contract agreement isn’t made by Sept. 22 at noon.

The auto workers strike against Detroit’s Big Three went into its fourth day on Sept. 18 with no signs of an early breakthrough and against the threat that the walkout could soon spread.
