Comdata Corp. said it has started processing cardless fueling transactions using radio-frequency identification, while two major truck-stop chains work to install the wireless technology at all of their fueling locations.

Comdata’s cardless transactions use an RFID tag to automate the fueling process, which decreases the time drivers spend at the pump and reduces the risk of fraudulent transactions by automatically shutting the fuel pump off when a truck pulls away, the company said.

Cardless transactions have the same controls and limits of a physical Comdata card, the company said.

“Cardless technology is the way of the future in fuel transaction processing,” Comdata President Steve Stevenson said in a statement.

The firm originally announced its plan to offer cardless fueling last year (9-12, p. 12).

Comdata said it processed its first cardless transaction on July 31 at the Love’s Travel Stop in Pauls Valley, Okla.

Love’s said cardless transactions will be available at more than 100 of its locations by the end of August and at all Love’s travel stops in September.“We are excited about what we consider the ‘next generation’ of fuel transaction processing through RFID technology,” said Jon Archard, director of fuel marketing at Love’s.

Travel Centers of America also is in the process of equipping all of its locations to accept cardless transactions, Comdata said.

As the infrastructure comes online, Comdata clients now are working with their sales representatives to implement cardless fueling in their fleets, Kevin Hill, director of product development at Comdata, told Transport Topics.

Comdata, which is based in Brentwood, Tenn., is a subsidiary of Ceridian Corp.
