Bay & Bay Transportation, an Eagan, Minn., truckload carrier, increased pay for its refrigerated van owner-operators on April 1, company President Sam Anderson told Transport Topics.

Before April, the drivers earned 90 to 92 cents per mile, regardless of the distance. Now owner-operators are paid $1.27 per mile a haul up to 150 miles, $1.17 between 151 and 250 miles, $1.07 between 251 and 300 miles, and 97 cents per mile for a long haul of more than 300 miles.

Bay & Bay ranks No. 22 on the Transport Topics sector list of the top U.S. and Canadian refrigerated carriers.

The company says owner-operators can expect to average about 2,500 miles per week.

“This increase in pay is important as we want to compensate our independent contractors for all of the hard work they put into each load they haul,” Anderson said. “We have made a significant business change in the last 12 months, and we needed to realign our compensation to meet the demands of the business.”

Aside from discounts on fuel and quarterly safety bonuses, Bay & Bay also pays for detention, layovers and extra stops.
