AN ANTONIO — American Trucking Associations’ board of directors decided to reconstitute its intermodal conference in an effort to tap the membership potential of an industry sector that is expected to quadruple within 20 years.

“This segment of the industry has great membership potential,” said Greg Owen, head of Ability Tri-Modal Distribution.

Intermodal, or drayage, carriers generally haul freight short distances to and from port terminals, rail sidings and air-cargo facilities.

“ATA is going to be the one entity to fight for them nationally,” Owen said, citing new food import rules and legislation being pushed by ATA to make intermodal equipment owners responsible for safety and maintenance of containers and trailers hauled over the highway.
