Officials aim to finalize the new requirements before the end of President Donald Trump’s current term, said Jonathan Morrison, NHTSA's top official.

Robotaxi passengers are falling asleep, spilling drinks, dropping food, vomiting, experiencing medical emergencies and even giving birth in the cars.

The comments follow NHTSA’s move last month to update federal safety standards to remove the mandate for manual brake pedals in autonomous vehicles.

The new rule, part of an ongoing effort by the Trump administration to modernize standards for driverless cars, could ease the path for purpose-built autonomous vehicles including Tesla’s Cybercab.

Waymo vehicles failed to recognize freeway construction zones in 13 instances in Phoenix and San Francisco in April and May, according to a June 17 filing with NHTSA.

The move is a step toward Uber challenging Alphabet’s Waymo, which has also been a partner of the ride-hailer.

Dubbed the Ojai, the self-driving vehicle will initially be made available to select riders in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Phoenix. 

In addition to building infrastructure for autonomous and ride-hail vehicles, the new company “expects to explore adjacent opportunities.” 

In addition to the larger fleet target, the company now expects full-year robotaxi revenue to grow 3.5 times its 2025 level of $16.6 million.

Waymo has temporarily halted service in five cities over concerns that its robotaxis may attempt to drive on flooded roads.
