Magna International Inc. has agreed to buy a driver-assistance unit from SSW Partners for about $1.5 billion following a drawn-out battle to control previous parent Veoneer Inc.

Qualcomm wrapped up its acquisition of Veoneer’s advanced driver assistance/self-driving vehicle software arm on April 4, highlighting the San Diego company’s bid to become a key technology supplier to automakers as it diversifies beyond smartphones.

Qualcomm Inc. has made a formal bid to buy automotive technology company Veoneer Inc. for more than $4 billion, beating a previous offer from Magna International Inc., according to people familiar with the matter.

Magna International Inc. will acquire Veoneer Inc. for $3.8 billion in cash, bolstering its business supplying advanced driver-assistance systems to automakers.
