In a matter of months, Walmart has become a major player in the burgeoning business of quickly fueling electric vehicles, speeding past Costco with its in-house network of electron pumps. 

Some 605 public, high-speed EV fueling stations switched on in the first quarter, a 34% increase over the year-earlier period.

With President Donald Trump’s tax bill killing EV incentives at the end of the month, the push for a sub-$30,000 vehicle that runs on electrons may help buttress the projected dip in sales.

Americans bought 310,800 EVs in Q2, a 6.3% drop from the year-earlier period. However, the sales dip — 21,000 vehicles — was nearly equal to the slump in transactions for Tesla.

Some 703 high-speed, public charging stations opened in the U.S. in the second quarter, the second-largest such infrastructure boom on record, according to Department of Energy data.
