Less-than-truckload carrier YRC Worldwide and the Teamsters union said late Thursday they have agreed on a new five-year National Master Freight Agreement to replace the current pact that expires March 31.

If ratified by YRC’s Teamsters employees, the deal will cover drivers, dockworkers and other personnel at the company’s less-than-truckload carriers, including Roadway Express, USF Holland, Yellow Transportation and New Penn Motor Express.

Trucking Management Inc. negotiated for YRC.

“The early outcome of these negotiations is positive for employees and positive for our customers,” said Mike Smid, president of North American Transportation for YRC.

Tyson Johnson, director of the Teamsters freight division, said the contract proposal, which faces a ratification vote, “allows the unionized freight companies to better compete with the nonunion companies and gives the unionized companies opportunities to grow business in new areas.”

The Teamsters said earlier that among unionized LTL carriers they would negotiate first with YRC and then turn their attention toward ABF Freight System and other carriers.

YRC Worldwide is ranked No. 4 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
