merican Trucking Associations and truck trailer manufacturer Wabash National Corp. said last week that Wabash has made a “substantial commitment” to fund ATA’s national truck driver recruitment and training campaign.

The two did not disclose Wabash’s contribution but said the trailer manufacturer’s contribution would help the trucking industry recruit qualified drivers.

“We’re more than just a supplier to the trucking industry,” said Wabash Chief Executive Officer Bill Greubel. “We have always focused on helping to improve the trucking industry by offering innovative solutions, and we feel the need to do more than business-as-usual in this case.

ATA said last May that the trucking industry is short 20,000 drivers, a figure which could grow to more than 110,000 by the year 2014. (Click here for previous coverage.)

“A source of sustained funding for the driver campaign is important to its success,” said ATA President Bill Graves. “At Wabash’s invitation, the door is open for other trailer manufacturers to sign on.”

ATA said its driver recruitment project, set to be running by mid-Spring, will include a matching-funds program for state trucking association driver recruitment ad campaigns, a trucking jobs Web site, and other advertising materials that can be adapted by motor carriers.
