Volvo Trucks North America May 20 announced the company and the United Auto Workers union reached a tentative agreement on the terms of a new six-year contract that would cover approximately 2,900 employees at the New River Valley truck assembly operations in Dublin, Va.

The new tentative agreement includes an additional year compared with the initial five-year tentative contract UAW members voted down earlier. Despite rejecting the offer, members returned to work on May 17 while negotiations continued.

The UAW did not respond to calls seeking to know the date of the latest ratification vote.

“Out of respect for our members, we will refrain from discussing details publicly until the membership at Volvo Truck can be fully briefed. Ultimately it is our members’ contract, and UAW Volvo Truck members will make this final decision as they vote,” Mitchell Smith, director of UAW Region 8, said in a statement.

Ray Curry, UAW secretary-treasurer and director of the UAW Heavy Truck Department, did report there were “even more solid gains toward fair pay, benefits and job security protections,” with the latest proposal.

VTNA said it was withholding further comment pending ratification by the members of UAW Local #2069.

Earlier, the UAW noted its members voted down the first tentative agreement in a ratification vote on May 16. “The tentative agreement, negotiated during an April strike, voted against common language by a 91% margin; hourly language was defeated by 91% margin; and salary language was defeated by 83%. Members of UAW Local 2069 will continue working and go back to the bargaining table shortly,” the UAW said. — Transport Topics
