Volvo Extends Partnership with Cummins for 2010 Engines

Will Keep Engine Maker’s EGR Technology Available

Volvo Trucks North America said Monday it will offer a heavy-duty engine made by Cummins Inc. that is certified for 2010 emissions standards for its Volvo VN Class 8 trucks, extending an existing agreement between the two.

VTNA said it will make the 15-liter Cummins ISX engine available, which uses exhaust gas recirculation technology.

Both companies released statements about the agreement on Monday, in which Volvo customers will be able to choose between Volvo’s engines that will use selective catalytic reduction technology, or Cummins’ EGR system.

“Volvo and Cummins have a strong legacy of serving the needs of our mutual customers in the North American truck market, and this agreement allows us to extend that legacy well into the future,” said Ed Pence, vice president of Cummins’ heavy-duty engine unit.

“Our customers have indicated a desire to have both the Cummins ISX and the Volvo engine family available in 2010,” said Per Carlsson, chief executive officer of VTNA.

“Cummins remains a valued partner of Volvo and our customers will continue to benefit from our comprehensive engine lineup of Volvo’s 11-, 13-, and 16-liter engines, plus the 15-liter ISX,” he said.
