Volvo to Cut Another 400 North American Jobs

After a 20% drop in January sales of its commercial trucks in North America, Volvo AB (VOLVY) said it plans to cut another 400 jobs from its North American truck operations and reduce production again, Bloomberg News reported Friday.

The Swedish company sold 1,244 units in North America in January, compared with 1,552 in January 2000, the news service said.

Volvo’s total truck sales rose 14% in January, gaining in all markets except North America where Volvo sells a quarter of its trucks.

Volvo had cut 1,000 temporary workers from its North American truck operationsin the first half of 2000. During that year, it cut North American production three times as demand fell, Bloomberg said.Transport Topics
