SF Corp. said Wednesday that its Midwest regional less-than-truckload carrier, USF Holland Inc., was expanding its coverage area to include much of the northeastern United States.
The company said in a statement Holland would open eight terminals in the Northeast by early September. USF announced in May it was closing another LTL unit, USF Red Star, following a one-day strike by the Teamsters union.
USF said Holland's new operations would extend into a portion of the service area vacated by the closure of Red Star. It said it would add at least between 1,000 and 1,200 jobs by the end of the year in the Midwest and Northeast.
The closure of Red Star put 1,500 people out of work. The Teamsters said they support the decision to expand Holland's coverage area and add jobs, USF's statement said.
Holland is USF's biggest and most profitable unit with $983.8 million in sales last year, Bloomberg reported.
USF Corp. is ranked No. 10 on the Transport Topics 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian trucking companies.
