U.S. Panel Rejects Peace Bridge Plan

A plan to build a second span for the Peace Bridge, linking Buffalo, N.Y., and Canada on a heavily-used truck route, were dealt a blow recently when a politically appointed panel on the U.S. side rejected the bi-national proposal.
Despite a recommendation from both U.S. and Canadian engineers, plus an internal environmental assessment by the Peace Bridge Authority, the Public Consensus Review Panel nixed the plan in March.

The rejection came amid demands by environmental groups that a separate impact statement be produced, which would require a higher threshold than the internal assessment. The Supreme Court for New York has ruled in favor of such an evaluation.
