U.S. Department of Transportation Deputy Secretary John Porcari will leave his position Dec. 31, according to an e-mail to DOT staff.

Porcari served for four years at DOT. He headed the Maryland Department of Transportation until President Obama tapped him to serve under former Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood in 2009.

“This is a bittersweet moment: It has been one of the great honors of my life to serve by your side on behalf of the American people,” Porcari said in the e-mail.

“I have had the privilege of seeing firsthand  your great work in delivering projects that jump-started the nation’s recovery from the Great Recession. I have witnessed your swift and effective response to natural disasters that have been visited upon our fellow citizens; your commitment to rebuilding our communities across the land with transportation solutions that truly serve America; and your service to improve aviation operations and safety for the nation that invented flight,” he said.

Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx credited Porcari with leading efforts to streamline DOT’s approval processes and increasing enforcement of the agency’s Buy America program. “Through these programs and so many others, John is leaving the department and the nation’s transportation system stronger than when he started,” Foxx said in an e-mail to staff.

Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez will serve as acting deputy secretary, Foxx said.

Porcari is moving to Parsons Brinckerhoff as senior vice president and national director of strategic consulting, the company said in a statement.
