PS Inc. and the Independent Pilots Association said they have reached a tentative agreement on a new labor contract.

The agreement will give wage and pension improvements to UPS pilots and a variety of changes to work rules.

It would allow UPS to reward its pilots in a “responsible manner, maintaining the flexibility needed to serve customers and expand the business while remaining competitive,” the two parties said in a joint statement late Friday.

Details of the agreement will not be disclosed before the IPA presents the tentative contract to all UPS pilots. The contract must be ratified by a majority of UPS’ 2,700 pilots; if ratified, it would not become amendable until the end of 2011.

According to the IPA, a vote by pilots is likely to be completed by mid-September.

Both sides commended the National Mediation Board for guidance during negotiations.

UPS ranked is No. 1 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
