UPS Pilots Ratify New Contract

ilots represented by the Independent Pilot’s Association have ratified an eight-year contract with UPS, the carrier said Thursday.

The agreement, which runs through 2011, covers 2,775 captains, first officers and flight engineers who work for UPS Airways, the carrier said in a release.

Of the 2,623 IPA members who voted on the agreement, 56.5% were in favor of the new deal, UPS said.



In related news, Bloomberg reported Sunday that UPS rival FedEx has reached a tentative agreement for pilot contracts with the Air Line Pilots Association. (Click here for previous coverage.)

UPS and FedEx are respectively ranked No. 1 and No. 2 on the Transport Topics 100 list of the largest for-hire carriers in the United States and Canada.

Meanwhile, the Associated Press reported Wednesday that UPS will hire more than 850 part-time package handlers at its West Columbia, S.C., air hub.

The number of flights per day from UPS’ regional hub at Columbia Metropolitan Airport is expected to increase to 23 from 14 following a soon-to-be-completed renovation, AP reported.

During the holiday season, as many as 34 flights could pass through the terminal, according to AP.

The temporary part-time workers will be employed through December and will have the option to apply for permanent part-time positions in 2007, AP said.
