he United Auto Workers union has asked its members at bankrupt auto-parts supplier Delphi Corp. to hold a strike vote by May 14, Bloomberg reported.
If workers authorize a strike, union leadership could call a strike if they feel it is necessary, Bloomberg said.
Delphi, General Motors Corp.’s biggest supplier, filed for bankruptcy last October. In late March it asked a court to allow it to impose wage cuts on workers. (Click here for previous coverage.)
A strike at the company could force it to shut down within 48 hours, Bloomberg said, and cost the company as much as $130 million a day, the Wall Street Journal reported earlier this year.
Delphi has offered UAW members $50,000 payments in exchange for 35% wage cuts, contingent on GM accepting some costs, Bloomberg reported.
