PHILADELPHIA — The Truckload Carriers Association should have a new president around Thanksgiving, TCA Chairman Keith Tuttle said here.

The association has been looking for a new president since Brad Bentley left earlier this year after less than 12 months on the job.

Tuttle, the founder of Motor Carrier Service in Northwood, Ohio, said in an Oct. 17 interview that TCA is financially strong and its programs are in good shape.

He said the truckload sector is still doing well, although there has been some softening of demand for services on an anecdotal basis. Business remains strong enough, though, that the shortage of drivers remains a major difficulty for the industry.

Historically, both company drivers and owner-operators have been paid by the mile, but Tuttle said a number of truckload carriers are experimenting with alternative pay methods to attract new drivers and retain current staff.

Tuttle said the shortage has been around for so long that shippers are taking notice and some are trying to cooperate on driver measures.
