Yahoo Rolls Out Voice Portal
Web portal Yahoo (YHOO) is introducing a new service today that will allow its customers to use any phone to access news, sports, weather, e-mail, and other information. Industry watchers view the new offering as the first significant voice portal.Users will not be limited to the mouse and will be able to access Yahoo information from any location, according to Geoff Ralston, Yahoo Communications Services Group vice president and general manager. Yahoo by Phone and new renderings of the Yahoo Mail and Yahoo Messenger services will be free.
Yahoo by Phone allows users to sign up via a Web site, and select a 10-digit code and four-digit password. Subscribers would then dial 800-MY-YAHOO for news and other information based on text-to-speech technology. Users may access their free voice mail and listen to their e-mail over the phone via the Yahoo Mail service. The new Yahoo Messenger service enables users to make free calls to any location in the United States. USA Today (10/10/00) P. 1B; Swartz, Jon
Corvis Unveils Fully-Optical Switch
Corvis Corp. (CORV) unveiled a fully-optical switch Monday intended to transmit Internet, voice, and video traffic at higher speeds and less cost than similar offerings incorporated into the fiber-optic networks across the country. The switch, which is Corvis' core product, has been delivered to telecom provider Broadwing. Corvis founder and CEO David Huber said Monday's delivery makes Corvis the first to provide an entirely optical switch with sufficient capacity for commercial use by a telecom provider in a nationwide network.
However, Lucent Technologies (LU) refutes Corvis' claims that it was first to market. Lucent said it introduced a similar all-optical product for commercial use in September to Global Crossing. Washington Post (10/10/00) P. E3; ElBoghdady, Dina
