    Small Shippers Play E-Business Catch-Up

Small shipping companies are finally using e-business to their advantage as they attempt to integrate logistics and freight-management information to coordinate end-to-end shipments among many carriers.

Tim Quillin, logistics analyst at Stephens Inc., said that companies can use the Internet to make decisions efficiently. Anderson's company has a third-party fleet management contract for Godfrey Transport, and helps fill 3,000 empty trucks on back hauls that are heading to pick up cookie deliveries.

Transportation.com provides a database that shows which equipment matches up with empty trucks and their locations, eliminating the need for hundreds of phone calls. Transportation.com offers rate management, credit reports, and carrier safety reports as well, usually for a $30 monthly fee.

SupplyLinks Web logistics firm is also starting a global service to match shipping needs with the best carrier. The software will link air, ocean, rail, and trucking carriers online. InternetWeek (08/21/00) No. 820, P. 10; Mullen, Theo

DSL Provider Takes Level 3 to the Last Mile

Level 3 Communications and DSLnetworks are set to reveal an alliance Wednesday intended to market broadband Internet access and network services to ISPs and ASPs.

Terms of the deal call for DSL connections aggregator DSLnetworks to purchase a minimum of $35 million in Level 3's network services over three years. The agreement allows Level 3 to provide DSL links to its ISP and corporate customers for the first time. While DSLnetworks will sell the services directly, the companies will jointly handle sales and marketing.

Level 3, an upstart telecom operator, is deploying a 16,000-mile global long-haul fiber-optic network and smaller metro area networks to 50 locations. CNet (08/29/00); Grice, Corey

3PLex Carves Niche in Logistics Market

Third-party logistics veteran Benjamin Gordon launched the company 3PLex to be one of the few transportation-related online exchanges designed to add 3PLs, not just shippers and carriers, to the exchange process.

The 3PLix platform is designed to automate load shipping using the AMTrix exchange broker software from Viewlocity, which is designed to enable collaboration between partners that use different technology and different operating systems. During the six-month site development, 3PLex got advice from Romar, Calloway, and Mark VII, which were involved in beta testing of the site.

Now there are close to 30 customers, and 3PLex is carving out a niche in trailer leasing. CRN (08/21/00) No. 908, P. 135; Cruz, Mike
