Key Issue in Verizon Talks Reportedly Settled

Verizon Communications and its unions settled a key issue Thursday in a move that may lead to the end of the strike of over 86,000 if its workers, sources familiar with the negotiations said. Unions will have an easier time organizing some of the workers in nonunion positions in Verizon's mobile unit, according

o reports. The Verizon Wireless division and its workers are not participating in the strike.

Verizon spokesman Eric Rabe said a point has been reached where the rest of the issues could be resolved soon. The deal formed yesterday calls for Verizon Wireless employees within the former Bell Atlantic service area to use a faster organization process called card check, which allows workers to join a union if a majority of workers at a work

Yellow Plans Highlighted for Online Marketplace

Yellow Corp.'s subsidiary Transportation.com debuted its long-anticipated online trucking marketplace at the end of June, with 1,800 registered companies and 450 signed up for auction and load matching.

Before September, Transportation.com President and CEO hopes to have a batch load process to handle numerous shipments per day; some customers already plan to handle hundreds of shipments each day through Transportation.com. The company is also planning to incorporate other transportation modes. ORTX is one company that has signed up with Transportation.com, although the company feels it needs to work with other sites as well due to market fragmentation, which keeps any one site from having sufficient volume.

Anderson Logistics is using Transportation.com on behalf of the Keebler subsidiary Godfrey Transportation, with hopes of bringing Godfrey more backhaul revenue; the amount of work it takes to put data online is keeping Anderson from using more than one Web site.

Another Transportation.com customer is SouthEastern Freight, which wants to make sure it does not avoid a channel that could be helpful. But SouthEastern is still concerned about using a company that might go under and finds the number of online intermediaries overwhelming. Mitel Prototype Chip to Up Speed of Fiber-Optics

Mitel is manufacturing a chip that could reduce costs and improve the performance of fiber-optic networks. The chip creates additional channels on which voice, data, and video traffic can be routed. The product uses Dense Wave Division Multiplexing technology to place 80 wavelengths on a light beam, compared to the 16 wavelengths on regular systems. Investor's Business Daily (08/11/00) P. A2

GE System Uses Value America for Supply Chain

GE Global Exchange's Enterprise System now uses Value America to connect its supply chain with other facilities within the company as well as with the manufacturers and companies involved in operations. It applies various technologies to facilitate these connections. Value America has helped it bring down or get rid of costs associated with traditional business operations and increase its offerings and number of suppliers. The system is compatible with Web servers, EDI, and fax. EAI Journal (08/00) Vol. 2, No. 7, P. S6
