Firm Envisions High-Tech Centers at Pumps
Ten Square plans to offer connections to the wireless Web through gas stations in metropolitan areas. The company hopes to eventually build a wireless network with Internet servers that offer Web access to nearby residences. With Ten Square's system installed, consumers could view Internet content, such as the latest sports or weather reports, via a gas pump screen. Ten Square has already conducted a successful trial of the technology in Atlanta and is preparing to offer the system nationwide this year, with the Sacramento and San Diego markets scheduled to launch services this month.

Samsung Puts Color Screens on Phone
Samsung has developed a combined cell phone/PDA device called the SPH-1300.The device offers a color screen and uses Palm software. Samsung plans to offer the SPH-1300 in the United States sometime after August of this year. The device's virtual Palm display and text pad are replaced by a numeric keypad when the user wants to conduct a phone call. This feature allows users to punch in numbers by touching the screen instead of using a stylus, according to Peter Skarzynski, a vice president with Samsung Technologies of America.
The device can also be used as a speakerphone so users can talk while using the phone's personal digital assistant (PDA) features.

Net to Catch Drivers in Collisions
Autoliv, the Swedish vehicle safety firm has developed a driver safety net that will firmly capture and keep drivers from being thrown through the windshield when safety belts or airbags are not effective enough or not in use.The net is compacted into a strip mounted around the top edge of the cab's windshield and side windows and cords run over a guide roller, down the window sides to a motor driven pulley. When the truck comes to a sudden emergency stop, the motor spins the pulley fast enough to crank the net down snugly over the windows in an instant. New Scientist (04/07/01); Fox, Barry
