n response to ongoing driver shortages, trucking companies are aggressively recruiting older drivers, including husband and wife teams, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

Truckload carrier Schneider National searches for potential long-haul drivers aged 50 and up through the American Association of Retired Persons, targeting older couples and putting them through driving school, the Journal said.

About 3,000 of Schneider’s 15,000 independent contractors and drivers are older people, the Journal reported.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of service and truck drivers aged 55 or older has increased 19% to 616,000 since 2000, the Journal said.

In February, American Trucking Associations announced its participation in the Alliance for an Experienced Workforce program, an initiative led by AARP to recruit workers aged 50 and up. As part of the program, ATA is planning an advertising campaign intended to attract older workers to driving careers. (Click here for previous coverage.)
