County Begins Creating Nation’s Largest Fleet of Hybrid Buses
Beginning in June, King County in Washington state will begin using General Motors Corp.’s hybrid technology on transit buses, the Associated Press reported.By the end of the year, the county will have 235 buses using a diesel-electric hybrid engine, giving King County the nation's largest fleet of diesel-electric hybrid buses. Transit officials said they expect the hybrid buses to save about 750,000 gallons of fuel a year.
The buses use Caterpillar engines and are manufactured by New Flyer of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
King County secured $5 million in federal funding to help pay for the buses, which the county has said cost $645,000 each. That is $200,000 more than a standard bus, AP said. Transport Topics
