DOT Upgrades Disaster-Relief With Continuous Vehicle-Tracking System

The Department of Transportation said it has improved its truck-tracking system, which is used for relief and recovery efforts.

“This new tracking system will allow for more constant monitoring of the location of all trucks being used by DOT during a response to a disaster,” Brian Turmail, DOT spokesman, told Transport Topics.

He said the new system will allow DOT continuous access to a truck’s location, rather than every four hours.

“Additional information about the shipment and its status also will be available through Web-based systems, to allow better access for officials involved in the relief and recovery operations,” he said.

DOT said trucks involved in emergency relief efforts have been tracked since 2002 so the agency could monitor the flow of assets and estimate arrival times. Transport Topics

Air-Weigh to Provide Dashboard Scale System for Mack

Truck equipment vendor Air-Weigh, Eugene, Ore., announced it is offering an in-dashboard scale system for Mack Vision models with rear air suspension.

The Air-Weigh system consists of an in-dash gauge and a remote trailer scale. When an Air-Weigh-equipped tractor and trailer are connected, trailer data is automatically transmitted to the onboard system, the company said.
