igher motor-carrier profits, aging fleet technology and the threat of a federal mandate for electronic driver logs is currently driving sales of high-tech devices and software, said executives of technology provider PeopleNet Communications Corp.

PeopleNet Chief Operating Officer Ron Konezny told Transport Topics in a Sept. 10 editorial forum that motor carriers were increasingly investing either in new technology or upgrades because they had more funds to spend amid strong freight demand and a growing economy.

He said such sales would grow even more if the government ended up mandating the use of electronic logs to track drivers’ hours of service.

PeopleNet provides onboard computing and wireless services to fleets that track trucks via satellite-based global positioning systems and transmit the information to fleet managers via cellular networks.
