To promote the September agreement with NITL — called the “Voluntary Guide to Good Business Relations for Shippers, Receivers, Carriers and Drivers” — panel leaders will cite findings from a survey of shippers and consignees, which indicated that improving the flow of trucks would improve profits. The panelists will speak at shippers’ conference and attempt to publish articles in shippers’ trade publications to show shippers the benefit of better traffic management, according to panel members.

Panel Chairman Richard Durst, president of Arctic Express, Hilliard, Ohio, said it was important to sit down and explain to shippers that there are clear productivity gains if they cooperate with carriers at the loading dock.

One problem Durst has encountered is that shippers that achieve those gains do not want to help others manage the flow of truck traffic because they see it as a competitive advantage.
