Mom knew what she was talking about when it comes to what a good night’s sleep can provide, said sleep authorities, who have looked at truck drivers, combat pilots and astronauts.
“Your grandmother as well as your mother were right — you need eight hours of sleep, and if you do not get it there are costs associated with it,” Mark R. Rosekind, president and chief scientist with Alertness Solutions, said on May 3 from his California office.
While supportive of the proposed hours-of-service rules from the Department of Transportation, Rosekind said there was no “magic bullet or single solution” in dealing with “fatigue in as diverse an operational industry as trucking.”
“As common-sensical as it sounds, we have really diminished and underestimated the importance of the body clock that has, from the primordial swamp, not changed,” he said.
