Rhode Island will hold off collecting truck registration fees for a couple of months and may make loans available to truckers endangered of going out of business because of high diesel prices.
On March 2, Gov. Lincoln Almond announced postponement until May 31 of the apportioned fees for the 5,500 commercial vehicles registered in the state. The fees were due March 31.
“The Economic Development Corporation has stepped in to assist with loan funds that have been turned around in just days, but we must do more to help our truckers maintain their financial livelihoods,” he said.
Truck operators still must update all the appropriate paperwork by the original deadline at the end of this month. They will receive a temporary registration certificate. Collection of fees will be waived until May.
Apportioned registration for trucks in interstate commerce is done through the International Registration Plan and is overseen by the Division of Motor Vehicles.
The average of cost of registering a truck in Rhode Island is $1,200 a year.
