Rep. Janice Hahn (D-Calif.) and Rep. Ted Poe (R-Texas) on Feb. 12 introduced legislation that would create a funding program for freight transportation projects.

Hahn said the National Freight Network Trust Fund Act of 2015 would authorize 5% of the revenue from import fees to rebuild freight infrastructure. In total, the bill would generate about $2 billion a year.

Hahn’s office explained the freight trust fund would dedicate funding for specific projects, similar to what the Highway Trust Fund accomplishes via the gas tax for state-level projects.

A similar measure introduced by the congresswoman last year did not advance through the chambers.
