Qualcomm Set to Expand Into Urban Trucking Markets

If it’s true that the rich get richer, then Qualcomm must be living proof.

The communications service provider, which was named the nation’s 16th-fastest growing company by Fortune Magazine in September, made news on two fronts last week that ultimately will expand its satellite-based businesses as well as ease the move into terrestrial systems for metropolitan commercial vehicles.

Also, the San Diego-based corporation appears unwilling to let the proliferation of competitors that are offering trailer-tracking products pass it by.

The Federal Communications Commission approved the company’s request to increase the number of mobile satellite units on the road from 250,000 to 400,600. Furthermore, an agreement was reached to use Sprint’s PCS network with its upcoming OmniExpress service, which company officials hope will provide a huge bonanza in the urban commercial vehicle market.
