Washington Joins Oregon in 48-Hour Effort to Snare Unsafe Big Rigs, Drivers
A two-day effort by law enforcement to snag unsafe rigs and drivers near Ridgefield was the first time Oregon and Washington officials had teamed up. In a project called Operation Trucker Check II, 16 law enforcement officers, including drug recognition experts, were involved in an increase in enforcement efforts at two points near Cascade Locks Tuesday.Oregon Department of Transportation statistics show that stretch of I-84 between Cascade Locks and The Dalles as particularly dangerous and decided to police both rigs and drivers. Also, both states have added a component to their truck-weighing, log-book checking, driver-quizzing routines: both states are asking for voluntary, anonymous urine samples.
Last October during the first Operation Trucker Check, 9.4 percent of 361 samples were positive for illegal or prescription drugs, according to Oregon State Patrol spokesperson Lt. Gregg Hastings. During this year's efforts one trucker was found to be driving with a suspended license, while another was removed from service for suspicion of alcohol use. The results of Tuesday's efforts will help law enforcement chart their future programs. The Columbian (Vancouver, Wash.) Online (09/15/99); Ryll, Thomas
