Oil Prices Drop Again on SPR Oil Sale

The price of crude oil dropped almost 4% Thursday as the United States sold 30 million barrels from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve, Bloomberg reported.

Prices dropped a third straight session, this time as much as $1.18 to $30.25 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. On London's International Petroleum Exchange, prices fell as much as $1.10 to $29.42 per barrel, the article said.

Meanwhile, President Bill Clinton remarked that he felt the United States would not face any fuel supply shortages in the winter months, but he also vowed to keep an eye on the situation, Bloomberg also reported. Transport Topics

    Florida Still Suffers from Flooding

Gov. Jeb Bush imposed a state of emergency on rain-soaked south Florida as thousands remained without power Thursday, the Associated Press reports.

Many roadways remained flooded from the 18 inches of rain that fell from a storm over the past two days, and many vehicles had been abandoned, the article said. About 9,000 homes and businesses in the region were still without power Thursday of the 91,000 customers that originally lost power, a Florida Power and Light spokesman told AP.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Keith regained strength along the Mexican coast, causing evacuations ahead of the storm, Reuters reported. This could potentially affect oil production in the Gulf of Mexico. Transport Topics

Shuster Sanctioned by House Ethics Panel

The U.S. House ethics committee sanctioned Transportation Committee Chairman Bud Shuster (R-Pa.) with a letter of disapproval for accepting improper gifts and favoring a lobbyist, the Associated Press reported Thursday. No further action will be taken.

The story said the letter was negotiated by Shuster and ends the three-year probe, but notes that Shuster criticized the committee findings and contended he had complied with the law and his "understanding of what was right."

The investigation began over allegations that Shuster had a conflict of interest with his former chief of staff, Ann Eppard, who became a lobbyist for transportation clients after leaving the congressman's office, AP said. Transport Topics
