Schneider Keeps on Truckin' Online
Schneider National Inc. was quick to get into the Internet. In 1997, Schneider National created a Web site that allowed customers to monitor shipment locations, thus avoiding multiple telephone calls and related overhead costs. The online Internet Order Entry and Internet Invoice Entry allow users to interface with the company's Utility for Managing Intergrated Transportation.A new division, Schneider Brokerage, was created in June to allow users to find carriers, loads, and employees through a secure site, The Schneider Connection. Schneider National, which last year began using the OmniTracs communication/tracking products from Qualcomm, has allied with Orbcomm Global for satellite technology that should help drivers find trailers and help reduce theft.
Brian Clancy, a principal at the consultancy MergeGlobal Inc., thinks the National Transportation Exchange and other online brokerages for unused capacity will not much hurt Schneider National, saying such online marketplaces suffer from "dirty data."
