Election-Day Rush Hour Blockade Threatened in Toronto

Although the union is urging restraint, some frustrated independent truckers in Ontario may create a rolling blockade across heavily traveled Highway 401 during rush hour Monday - creating serious slowdowns on election day, the Toronto Star reported that day.

So far, the truckers have been unable to obtain compensation for rising diesel prices, and many complain they must operate illegally by driving too many hours in an effort to bring in more cash.

Some shippers, such as major automakers, are paying a fuel surcharge, but the truckers complain none of that money is going into their pockets, according to the article. Transport Topics

    Airborne eCourier Will Deliver Electronically

Airborne Freight Corp. (ABF), which operates under the trade name Airborne Express, announced Monday Airborne eCourier, a new service that will enable its shippers to send confidential, signed documents electronically.

Airborne eCourier is an Internet-related service that will allow users to add an electronic signature beginning in February, making legal document transfer available electronically.

Document transfer is set to start in January. The new product was spurred by the Electronic Signature Act, which President Clinton signed into law June 30.

The Internet document delivery market is a burgeoning one, with an estimated $100 billion being spent per year by 2003, the Seattle-based company said. Transport Topics

    Isuzu Reports Losses

Isuzu Motor was the only Japanese automaker to report net losses specifically due to a drop in truck and car sales, Bloomberg reported.

For its first half, Isuzu reported a net loss of $198 million or 15 cents per share, the wire service said. A comparison from the same period last year was not available because the company has not reported half-year losses until this year.

The drop in sales was due to heavy competition from Toyota and Honda, the story said. Transport Topics

Delphi Fires 100 Workers at Mich. Component Plant

Delphi Automotive Systems Corp.(DPH) announced Monday that earlier this month it fired 100 workers in its Saginaw, Mich. steering systems plant that makes components for light and medium-duty trucks, Bloomberg reported.

The layoffs were a result of lower vehicle production at major companies such as General Motors and Ford Motor Co., the wire service said. Transport Topics

    German Postal Regulator Leaving

The top postal regulator in Germany plans to leave his post by the end of the year, to take a job at Credit Suisse First Boston, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

Klaus-Dieter Scheurle, a free-market advocate, ruffled feathers at Deutsche Post (DPW-FRK) when his agency ruled that the government-owned mail and package carrier had to deliver at discount rates for competitors like United Parcel Service (UPS), the Journal said. Transport Topics

    Compaq Computers to Use Logistics.com

Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ) will use Logistics.com, an online transportation company, to facilitate the transporting of Compaq's products, Logistics.com said.
