International Truck to Lay Off Over 1,800 More Workers

International Truck and Engine Corp. expects to eliminate 1,851 jobs, or nearly 40% of the work force, at its Springfield, Ohio, plant by the end of 2003, according to an Associated Press report. International had previously announced in September that 500 jobs would be eliminated at the plant, its largest in North America.

International spokeswoman Gretchen Rosswurm told the AP Wednesday that the plant's workforce will be cut back from its current level of 4,729 because the plant will soon be producing only a medium-duty truck and its new cab-assembly plant in the area will require fewer workers.

International is a subsidiary of Chicago-based Navistar International Corp. (NAV), which itself cut 1,600 white- and blue-collar workers in August. Transport Topics

Terion Offering Trailer Tracking in Mexico

Terion Inc. said Wednesday that it is offering FleetView cellular based trailer tracking services to U.S. customers operating in Mexico - making the announcement at the 2000 American Trucking Associations' Management Conference & Exhibition in San Diego.

The service will initially be available by request. In addition to a one-time signing fee of $12.50 per trailer, pricing for FleetView coverage in Mexico is $0.25 to $0.40 per message, depending on the customer's service plan. The announcement is a result of an agreement between Terion and Telcel of Mexico. The companies have agreed to cooperate in providing seamless cellular roaming for Terion FleetView customers.

Headquartered in Melbourne, Florida, Terion is a business-to-business wireless application service provider. Transport Topics

American Freightways Commits to Intelligent Transportation Systems

Truckload carrier J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. (JBHT) announced a joint venture Wednesday with Transport Media Network LLC, a Madison, Wis.,-based advertising agency, to provide advertising space and services on J.B. Hunt trucks, trailers and containers. The venture is billed as the largest fleet advertising business of its kind in the nation.

Transport Media Network says marketers can target specific geographic areas for their advertising messages through J.B. Hunt's dedicated route contract services. J.B. Hunt, which is based in Lowell, Ark., blankets the nation with over 10,500 trucks and 43,000 trailers and containers.

"As a fresh alternative to traditional media, our traveling billboards offer a unique advertising vehicle that's a full 53 feet of in-your-face impact for a low cost-per-impression," said Transport Media founder Thomas F. Pyle.

American Petroleum Exhange Auctioned 105 Million Gallons in October

In its first month of operation, the American Petroleum Exchange has successfully completed over 300 fuel auctions initiated by high-volume fuel buyers including United Parcel Service (UPS), FedEx Ground and Consolidated Freightways (CFWY), the Rockville, Md.-based company said Wednesday.

The auctions represented term deals to deliver 105 million gallons of gasoline and diesel over the next 12 months. Fifteen suppliers won contracts in the auctions, which saw 49 suppliers bidding for the business. Winners include major oil companies, large integrated refiners, multi-state distributors and local distributors.

Starting Wednesday, the buyers will use the exchange to dispatch and take delivery of an average 412,500 gallons of fuel every business day. Meanwhile, suppliers are triggering electronic invoices via the exchange, completing the first fully automated purchase, dispatch and payment of fuel in the United States done exclusively through an Internet-based neutral exchange, according to the company.
