Matteson Targeting Overweight Trucks
Matteson, Ill., has decided to spend $15,000 for portable truck scales. Police Chief Larry Burnson said the village mainly wants to head off road wear, but it also anticipates the revenue from fines of up to $10,000. Matteson already stops a couple of overweight trucks daily, said the chief.Other jurisdictions in Illinois using portable scales are Aurora, Palos Heights, South Holland, and Cook County. BAX Global has named Richard English to the post of vice president of import-brokerage, where he will be in charge of widening the company's brokerage business in the United States. He joins BAX from AEI, where he was vice president of import services.The company also named Bob Moss as vice president of transportation and engineering; he previously handled Federal Express customs and logistics as Fritz Cos.' director of express clearance operations. I-10/610 Roadwork
A section of westbound Interstate 10 in the New Orleans area will be shut down Saturday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. and the following day between 6 a.m. and noon. Trucks will not be able to use I-10 West between Airline Drive and Clearview parkway due to roadwork on an I-610 bridge. Eastbound I-10 will not be affected. A Georgia superior court judge chose not to dismiss a lawsuit filed against Cobb County by Norfolk Southern Railway. The railroad wants to move utilities at its Austell facility, where it plans a transfer terminal serving up to 3,000 trucks daily. The county wanted the suit dismissed. The Transportation Department Research and Special Programs Administration is looking for public comments on proposed new radioactive-materials rules that would match international standards.The proposals include reduced measurement thresholds that would mandate special packaging and labeling for a wider range of items. Requirements for packaging of some shipments, especially air shipments, could also be altered. Fritz Cos. Reports 6.7% Increase in Profit
The freight forwarder and logistics company Fritz Cos. said it saw $9.1 million in profit for its second fiscal quarter, up 9.1% from the year-earlier quarter, with net revenue up 4.6% to $160.7 million and gross revenue up 11.7% to $426.5 million. Net revenue consists of gross revenue with direct transportation costs subtracted. The company also saw operating expenses up 5%, due to 6.9% higher labor costs and 1.4% higher general and administrative costs.
