County to Conduct Truck Traffic Survey

The Ventura County (Calif.) Transportation Commission this week will appoint Wilbur Smith Associates to perform a $105,000 study of truck traffic originating at Port Hueneme, the sole deep-water facility from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

The six-month survey, involving checking the truck volume on three roadways and polling truck drivers about their destinations, is intended to update the county's truck-traffic information, last updated in 1988. The information will be used to create truck corridors for increased efficiency and less congestion in Port Hueneme and Oxnard. Los Angeles Times (01/05/00) P. 3B; Blake, Catherine

Legislator Seeks Audit of Caltrans Permit Office

Responding to a rash of accidents brought about by improper permitting of oversized loads, California state Sen. Betty Karnette (D-Long Beach) was set to ask that the Caltrans permit office be audited. The request to the Joint Legislative Audit Committee was to be made Wednesday by Karnette, who said the state auditor has the means to help Caltrans track down the cause of the problem. Karnette is the senate transportation committee chairwoman. Los Angeles Times (01/05/00) P. 7B; Garvey, Megan

Police Seize Drugs on Truck, Arrest 3

U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency agents on Monday found 835 pounds of marijuana in a tractor-trailer they followed over the weekend due to suspicion about its contents.

Police arrested driver Jose Navarrete Higareda as well as two men living at the Addison, Ill., apartment where the truck was parked when the drugs were found. The truck was in Missouri when the agents learned of it, and it was followed to the Chicago suburb. They think the Texas company that owns the truck is a legitimate business.

Charges against Higareda are pending, while the other two were given state charges of possession and intent to deliver. Chicago Tribune (01/05/00) P. 5, Trib West Section
