    Teamsters to Unveil Anticorruption Plan

Teamsters President James P. Hoffa was set to unveil a plan to fight organized crime and corruption in the union Tuesday at a Chicago meeting of the union's leaders.

The measures in the plan include a code of conduct, an ethics board, and a disciplinary system for abuses. The plan also calls for study of how the union has done so far in rooting out mob ties. Details have yet to be filled in, with Hoffa hoping that it will be mostly complete by the end of summer and passed by the union board before the end of December.

Since the federal government began supervising the Teamsters in 1988, the union has kicked out over 100 officers and members for alleged mob ties, while mismanagement or corruption has sent many locals into trusteeship. The supervision began with a Justice Department consent decree in which union leaders pledged to rid the union of organized crime links. Hoffa has made it a priority to end the government supervision. Wall Street Journal (01/11/00) P. A2; Burkins, Glenn

    AEI Acquires Transworld Project Forwarder

Air Express International has announced its acquisition of the Transworld group of companies. A project-forwarding specialist, the Texas-based Transworld will be renamed AEI Project Services as a division of AEI Ocean Services.

Danzas' proposed purchase of AEI recently received regulatory approval in the U.S., with European Commission approval expected for February. Danzas, the Swiss freight forwarder, was acquired by Deutsche Post last year. Journal of Commerce Online (01/11/00)

Renault's Schweitzer Sees Alliances in Truck Industry

Responding to a reporter's question, Louis Schweitzer, chairman of Renault, said he thinks cooperation will come naturally for truck manufacturers, although he does not believe "it's a question of survival."

Schweitzer had been asked at a press conference about a potential Renault Vehicules Industriels and Mack Trucks partnership. He did not speculate on whether the companies' "ownership structure" will be affected. AFX European Focus (01/11/00)

Aspiring Country Artist Thanks Truck Driver With Song

Aspiring country-music performer Ron Dunivan's new album includes a song written to thank an anonymous truck driver who helped get a Dunivan song on the television show "Real Stories of the Highway Patrol."

Dunivan gave 1,000 two-song tapes to California truckers in 1997. Later that year, the TV show's producers got in touch with Dunivan, saying they had heard about a Dunivan song called "It's Hard to Find the Old Road Signs of U.S. 66" from a trucker. The program ended up using it every day of a week-long 1998 special about U.S. 66.

The musician wrote the song "Truck Drivers: Night Riders of the Road" to thank the trucker and included it on his new CD, also titled "It's Hard to Find the Old Road Signs of U.S. 66." TruckingInfo.com (01/11/00) ; Hund, Peter

EU's Palacios Says 'Substantial Fines' for France if Trucker Strike Continues

European Union Transport and Energy commissioner Loyola de Palacios said on local radio France faces "very substantial fines" from the European Commission should the current trucker strike go on.

She said the French government has not helped bring an end to the strike by saying the strike concerns the price of diesel, instead of the government's proposal of a 35-hour work week. That will hurt carriers' and drivers' ability to compete with their counterparts elsewhere in Europe, she said.

Separately, Economy Minister Rodrigo Rato said the Spanish government does not intend a diesel subsidy but is trying to cut prices by creating more sale points for diesel fuel. AFX European Focus (01/11/00)

Having acquired Larsen Electronics, which was its parent company, Gambler-Johnson is being reclassified as a limited-liability corporation. TruckingInfo.com (01/11/00)
