Oklahoma to Begin Truck-Weighing Technology Program

Oklahoma officials are set to begin a $61 million project to build nine state-of-the-art inspection stations will improve highway safety and better enforce truck weight laws, the Associated Press reported.

The project — which will employ technology that will allow trucks to be weighed without stopping — was announced Tuesday by members of the Oklahoma Corporation Commission and highway officials, AP reported.

The technology also includes sensors that will be able to sniff out bombs and detect radiation, improving security, AP said.

Officials said deterring overweight trucks is imperative because of a projected 70% increase in commercial vehicle traffic over the next 20 years, putting more stress on already overburdened roads, AP said.
