raffic will be funneled to one lane northbound on Interstate 95 south of Washington, D.C. — a corridor through which 15,000 to 17,000 commercial vehicles pass daily — starting at 8 p.m. Friday through the early morning hours Monday, the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project said.
Officials are rerouting traffic for four miles as they get ready to open the first of two new Wilson Bridge spans over the Potomac River on I-95, also known as the Capital Beltway.
They are urging motorists and truckers to travel the western side of the Capital Beltway over the American Legion Bridge this weekend to avoid traffic tie-ups that could reach four miles if 60% of drivers divert, and up to 14 miles if 50% divert.
Officials said that by Monday morning, all three lanes of northbound traffic will be flowing over the new bridge.
Southbound traffic will be moved to the bridge during the weekend of July 14, when officials again plan to warn motorists and truckers to avoid the crossing.
