The National Motor Freight Traffic Association has launched a free, anonymous threat-reporting portal as transportation companies contend with increasingly sophisticated cargo theft, freight fraud and cyber-enabled crime.
The Threat Report Portal is designed to help carriers, shippers, brokers and third-party logistics providers share information about cyber incidents, suspicious activity and cargo crime and gain a broader view of threats affecting the transportation sector, NMFTA said June 3.
The Alexandria, Va.-based association said the portal is intended to encourage industrywide information sharing at a time when freight fraud and cyber-enabled cargo crime continue to evolve. Organizations can use the tool to report incidents anonymously and review information about threats reported by others across the sector.
“Threat actors are constantly adapting their tactics, and no single organization has visibility into every threat facing the industry,” said Joe Ohr, chief operations and technical officer at NMFTA. “When organizations share what they’re experiencing, the entire industry benefits. By combining real-time industry reporting with NMFTA’s threat analysis, the portal helps organizations stay informed, communicate emerging risks and take proactive steps to protect their operations.”

NMFTA is encouraging transportation and logistics organizations to submit reports involving cyber events, such as ransomware, phishing attacks and network intrusions. The portal also is intended for reports tied to cargo crimes, including cargo theft and fictitious pickups.
The association said participation is free. Reports can be submitted without identifying the organization, a structure NMFTA said is meant to help companies share information while contributing to a clearer picture of the threats facing the industry.
The portal is part of NMFTA’s broader cybersecurity and freight security efforts. It also complements the association’s Freight Fraud Prevention Hub, which focuses on fraud and cargo theft prevention.
NMFTA said the value of the portal will grow as more organizations submit reports. The association said the information collected through the portal is expected to help identify threat patterns and lessons learned from incidents affecting transportation and logistics companies.
