N.J. Freight Plan Calls for Road, Rail, Shipping Improvements

A New Jersey Department of Transportation plan released Tuesday recommends improvements in the state’s roadways and other freight passages to maximize the economic benefits of more efficient freight movement.

The plan calls for widening a stretch of the New Jersey Turnpike, for dock-rail improvements at the Port of New York and New Jersey and the deepening of the New York/New Jersey Harbor shipping channels.

The recommendations of the Comprehensive Statewide Freight Plan are aimed maximizing investments to maximize the economic benefits of better freight movement, NJDOT Commissioner Kris Kolluri said in a statement.

The plan also advises the state to safeguard its critical freight modes by conducting a multi-modal corridor study addressing freight facility access, intra-facility movement, highway/rail connections, land use and community issues, the report said.
